Digital Marketing: successful plans/organizations – Sarah Houghton-Jan & Aaron Schmidt

  • Library website
    • make it two-way – register for card, have an identity, share opinions?
  • NEED good content online – anyone can have a blog, but is it relevant? Reflect customers & their needs? Are they engaged?

    • Library directory listings – is MCL’s correct?
    • Submit rss feeds to blog search engines – “feed submitter“; Robin Good’s list; blog geo-search engines (Portland-area?) – frappr; feedmap; blogwise;
    • Wikimapia – use this for statewide libraries – work with OSL and link from OLA website
  • Search engine findability – Google AdWords $, SEO $ – well-worth the money
  • People expect wireless – not optional – be listed in free wifi directories
  • Get em in with wifi and then when they are in, share other services with them
  • Community websites – events!!! (need to link)

  • Social review websites – yelp – search for MCL – comment with thanks!
  • Important to say you are from the library – be AUTHENTIC!!
  • Use yelp comments in marketing – ask!
  • Also, use the criticism – what can we do/change – contact them – DO NOT ask them to take it down – ask them to comment on change/contact
  • Publicize yelp status!
  • Make A/V content finbable – podcasts/videocasts – Oregon library training – NW Central – podcasts/videocasts
  • Social networking – ning, flickr, myspace, facebook
  • Find local blogs – blogdigger, metroblogging
  • Interact with local blogs!
    • Don’t intrude, be available
    • Use appro. Blog
    • Authentic interactions
    • Don’t be heavy handed
  • Tech boards, con’t ed blogs – comment!
  • Facebook – share stories about library
  • Hennepin county – bookspace – wonderful model!
    • Embarrassment of Riches blog!
    • Bookspace – featuring people – authentic!!!
    • Did not put up artificial barriers
  • Expert sites – subject experts – we do this, too!
    • Allexperts.com
    • Janet Irwin – Genealogy (esp. Oregon)
    • Slam the boards – mass marketing push – once a month
  • Push the info out – email & rss feed – put newsletter on rss feed! (need both!)
    • Send periodically – don’t spam – not too often
    • Variety of features
    • Wikipedia article – is there one for OLA?
  • Register variants of URL
  • IM – have to do
  • Text Messaging – cell & SMS – offer circ notices and references via SMS – Orange County Libraries do this “Text a Librarian” – Spark – SMS
  • Twitter – brief messages – clear about what your sending – events? Books? i.e. LibrarySecrets
  • Be a tech leader in your community – digital natives (future voters!!!)
